What is your website good for?

I didn't plan my website as a advertisement.

My website is my receptionist. It's my contact when I'm not available. People can come to my website and find out about what we do. I figured that only people who already knew about me would go to my site. Probably, only people who had my business card or other correspondence on which the site is referenced would go looking for the site.

I didn't think that ranking and search engine optimization (SEO) were any concern of mine. I was wrong.

People who might have given me business didn't because they couldn't find me:
  • They knew me, but couldn't remember my business name.
  • They spelled my business name wrong.
  • I've even heard from someone much later who couldn't remember my name when they were looking, but search for a technical writer in their area and found someone who knew about page ranking.
So coming late to the game, I've tried a few things to make my site more amenable to being found in a general search. As a result some search engines like Yahoo, Ask, and Altavista can find me. Dumpsites like Dogpile and Mamma find me because of Yahoo. Google and MSN are resisting, but I will get there, eventually. Google found me in general searches for a while, twice. Once I was in 2 position on the first page for two weeks. Then, just as mysteriously as it came, it went, and I'm no wiser.

If you've never considered how searchable your site is, search the term "search engine optimization". Select one of the sites with free tips and work your way through them.

Bruce Clay put a lot of information about optimization and keywords on one page for you:
